G♯ Locrian

G♯ · A · B · C♯ · D · E · F♯

With both a flattened second and a flattened fifth, G♯ Locrian is the darkest of the seven major-scale modes and the only one whose tonic chord is diminished. That lack of a stable fifth makes it hard to write in, so it mostly appears over half-diminished chords in jazz and in short, unsettled passages in metal. A colour more than a key.
