The fourth of Messiaen's modes of limited transposition, F Messiaen's Mode #4 clusters eight notes into a symmetrical pattern that repeats at the tritone. Messiaen chose these modes for their colour rather than their melodic potential, and this one is dense with semitones. Composition material rather than improvising vocabulary.
