E Locrian
E · F · G · A · B♭ · C · D
With both a flattened second and a flattened fifth, E Locrian is the darkest of the seven major-scale modes and the only one whose tonic chord is diminished. That lack of a stable fifth makes it hard to write in, so it mostly appears over half-diminished chords in jazz and in short, unsettled passages in metal. A colour more than a key.
