A Major Pentatonic

A · B · C♯ · E · F♯

Five notes drawn from the A major scale, leaving out the two that cause trouble — the fourth and the seventh. With no semitones anywhere in it, A Major Pentatonic is famously forgiving: almost anything you play sounds consonant. It's the first scale most lead guitarists learn, and the backbone of country, folk, blues-rock, and countless pop solos.
