E9♭5
E 9th Flat 5 · 4 fingerings
A dominant ninth with a flattened fifth, E9♭5 combines the richness of the ninth with the ambiguity of the lowered fifth. It's firmly jazz and fusion vocabulary, generally used as a tense dominant heading somewhere else, and it maps neatly onto whole-tone thinking. A specialist colour rather than an everyday chord.
