Stacking to the eleventh over a major seventh gives Amaj11 a wide, ambiguous, floating sound. Because the natural eleventh sits awkwardly against the major third, players usually voice the two far apart or omit the third altogether. A jazz and film-scoring colour, best used where you want space rather than definition.
