A7sus4

Take a dominant seventh and replace the third with a fourth: A7sus4 keeps the forward pull of a dominant chord but softens its edge. It's a staple of funk, soul, and modal jazz, and works beautifully as a vamp you can sit on for bars at a time. Often resolves to the plain dominant seventh, or simply stays put as its own colour.
